International Kagyu Monlam is a festive prayer ceremony dedicated to increasing world peace and harmony. It is held each year in Bodhgaya, India, a very sacred place, at the Great Stupa, under the Maha Bodhi Tree, by the Vajra Seat, where the Buddha attained enlightenment. Monlam, which means aspiration in Tibetan, is held during the 8th-15th days of the 11th month of the Tibetan calendar. The pageantry and traditions were established hundreds of years ago. In 1983, Kyabje Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche re-established the tradition. Over 5000 Kagyu Sanghas are expected to participate in the prayer ceremony this year.
