The 1st reincarnation of the Zurmang Drugpas was born in Rangchen as the Drugpa Rinpoche of Jigpo Monastery. The 2nd Drugpa Rinpoche was born into the Uhan family, a reputable noble family in Zurmang, Qinghai. He was subsequently acknowledged to be the reincarnation of Drugpa Rinpoche by Zurmang Monastery. Being reluctant to let Rinpoche remain at Jigpo Monastery, he was then enthroned in Zurmang and from then on was thus known as the Tulku of Zurmang. Both the 1st and 2nd reincarnation of Zurmang Rinpoche were omniscient on both theoretical and practical aspect of the Buddha's teachings.
The 3rd reincarnation, Karma Rangsha Chogi Nyingma was born to the Paho family. He was formally being recognized by His Holiness the 15th Gyalwa Karmapa as the reincarnation of the successive line of Drugpa Tulkus. The 3rd Drugpa Rinpoche thereafter studied in the monastery of Tai Situ Rinpoche for an indefinite period of time. Later, returning to Zurmang, he continued his studies for many years. Subsequent to that, he went for the traditional 3-years and 3-months retreat and eventually, he left the monastery to practice in isolation for a duration of 6 years.
As the monastery needed his residence, both Tengha Rinpoche and Gharwang Rinpoche personally requested him to return to the monastery. At that time, Zurmang Tengha Rinpoche was of yore while Gharwang Rinpoche was still too young. Drugpa Rinpoche therefore took up the task of looking after the monastery and was responsible for teaching and instructing the monks there. Due to his profound discernment of the Buddha's teachings and accomplishment in practice, he was highly appraised by His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa and the 11th Situ Rinpoche.
The present reincarnation of Zurmang Drugpa was born to the Norje family. Before being recognized formally, he was already an ordained living in the monastery of Zurmang Tengha Rinpoche. He was succeedingly being recognized by the 12th Situ Rinpoche as the 4th Drugpa Rinpoche of Zurmang Monastery and was given the Dharma name of Tengyu Tenzin Nyingma Kaila Pal Zangpo. From Situ Rinpoche, he received the novice monk vows and Bodhisattva vows while receiving numerous initiations from him when he first visited Tibet
Drugpa Rinpoche subsequently received and studied under Karma Choten Rinpoche and Shencho Rinpoche. From them, he received the oral transmission on the Mahamudra and Dzogchen teachings. The oral transmission of the Zurmang Kagyud lineage and initiations was being handed down to him from the 11th Zurmang Tengha Rinpoche. Thereafter, he went into the traditional retreat for 3-years and 3-months. .
